Got questions about how tutoring with Engaged Minds Academy works? We have pulled together the answers families ask us most. Do not see what you are looking for? Reach out and we will help.
What subjects and grade levels do you tutor?
We tutor students in grades 3 through college in math, science, reading, writing, social studies, Spanish, and study skills — plus SAT & ACT prep and college essay coaching for students heading into admissions season.
How much does tutoring cost?
General tutoring is $85/hour, with discounted packages at $305 for 4 hours and $595 for 8 hours. SAT & ACT Prep is $99/hour ($340 for 4 hours, $665 for 8 hours) given the specialized test-prep instruction involved. Packages can be shared across every student in your household — they are not limited to one child.
How long are tutoring sessions?
Most sessions run 60 minutes. For younger students, 30- to 45-minute sessions often work better depending on grade level and subject — we will help you find the right length during your consultation.
What platform do you use for virtual sessions?
All sessions are held over Google Meet — no special software required, just a device, a stable internet connection, and a quiet space to focus. Sessions cannot be held from a moving vehicle, so students should be set up somewhere they can fully engage.
Is there a minimum commitment?
No. You can pay hourly as you go or choose a discounted package — whatever fits your family. There is no long-term contract required to get started.
Can my student get help in more than one subject?
Yes. During your consultation, we will ask about every course your student needs support in, so we can match them with a tutor who can help across subjects — sometimes even within the same session.
How are tutors matched to my student, and are they vetted?
We match tutors based on subject expertise and their ability to build a lasting relationship with your student — many of our families keep the same tutor for years. Every EMA tutor is background-checked.
Do you work with students who have an IEP, 504 plan, or other learning differences?
Yes. Just let us know during your consultation so we can match your student with a tutor experienced in the support they need.
What happens during the free consultation — is there any actual teaching?
The consultation is a conversation to understand your student’s needs and goals, not a teaching session. If you would like to experience tutoring itself before committing, we also offer a complimentary 30-minute trial session.
What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?
We ask for at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule a session without it affecting your hours — late cancellations or no-shows may result in a session being deducted from your package. We make reasonable exceptions for genuine emergencies, and full policy details are shared when you enroll.
What payment methods do you accept, and is tutoring refundable?
We accept all standard payment methods. Tutoring payments and prepaid hours are nonrefundable, though we will always correct a verified billing error on our end.
Where are you located, and do you tutor students outside Houston?
We are based in Houston, TX, and tutor 100% virtually — so we work with families across the country, not just locally.
